HAPTEN

A low-molecular-weight substance that alone can react with its corresponding antibody. In order to be immunogenic, haptens are bonded to molecules having molecular weights greater than 5000. An example would be the hapten digoxin covalently bonded to bovine serum albumin, forming the digoxin-bovine serum albumin (BSA) immunogen.
